Chai-Spiced Tea Cake Recipe

Chai-Spiced Tea Cake Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 2 chai tea bags (black tea with spices)
    • 1/2 cup boiling water
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • For the Chai Glaze:
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 2-3 tablespoons brewed chai tea (from steeped tea bags above)
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Optional Garnish:
    • A sprinkle of ground cinnamon or cardamom
    • Edible flowers or a dusting of powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. Brew the Chai Tea:
    • Steep the chai tea bags in 1/2 cup boiling water for 5-7 minutes. Remove the tea bags and let the tea cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Cake Batter:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Gradually mix in the cooled chai tea and milk, alternating with the dry ingredients. Start and end with the flour mixture.
    • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  3. Bake the Cake:
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  4. Prepare the Chai Glaze:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and enough brewed chai tea to achieve a smooth, pourable consistency.
  5. Glaze the Cake:
    • Once the cake is completely cool, drizzle the chai glaze over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides for a rustic look.
    • Optionally, garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, cardamom, edible flowers, or a light dusting of powdered sugar for extra flair.
  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Slice and serve your chai-spiced tea cake with a hot cup of chai tea for the ultimate pairing!
